Innovate Drogheda banner‘Innovate Drogheda – Brewing/Distilling’ is the first of a series of four events, celebrating Drogheda’s industrial & entrepreneurial past with its present and future entrepreneurs.

  • A Drogheda Millmount Museum historian will talk about former breweries in Drogheda, the history of Cairnes Brewery, types of breweries, why Drogheda had breweries & some interesting facts.
  • Geoff Fitzpatrick of Jack Cody’s Brewery will talk about setting up a micro-brewery and the challenges/opportunities in the sector.
  • An open discussion will be held amongst attendees.

At one time, Drogheda had 18 distilleries and 9 breweries in the region.

In 1825 William Cairnes founded Cairnes Brewery, Drogheda. The brewery gave employment to almost 200 workers for over 150 years and was famous for its ales and stout. From 1951 the brewery exported bottled stout to America. The firm also acquired the important wine and spirit business of Preston Bros. The brewery closed its gates in 1960, bringing to an end the brewing industry in Drogheda.

Drogheda hasn’t had a brewery since Cairnes Brewery closed in 1960 but on August 15 2014, Geoff launched his new business, Jack Cody’s Brewery, in the Boyne Business Park in Greenhills, Drogheda.
