‘Making Stuff Up for a Living’ – Oisin Mc Gann

Born in Dublin, Oisín McGann spent his childhood there and in Drogheda, County Louth where he studied at St.Olivers Community College. Refresh Boyne and The Mill are delighted to have him back in Drogheda for this talk.

He studied at Ballyfermot Senior College and Dun Laoghaire School of Art and Design, and went on to work in illustration, design and film animation. He now lives back in Ireland and works full time as an author and illustrator.

In 1992 he dropped out of college to set himself up as a freelance illustrator/artist, serving the publishing and design industries. In 1997, he took up a position as Background Layout Designer for Fred Wolf films, working on the animated series of Zorro. After completing his contract, he decided to expand his horizons and left for London in February 1998 to seek his fortune. He found gainful employment as a security guard, watching over trains and then hospitals.

In January 1999, he joined the M&M Consultancy, a small advertising and design firm, as art director and soon expanded into copy writing. After three and a half years of working in advertising he became increasingly concerned for his immortal soul. He returned to Ireland in the summer of 2002 much as he had left – with no job, no home and some meagre savings. He set himself up as a freelance illustrator once more, before getting his first books published in 2003.

He has written and illustrated numerous books for all ages of reader, including the Mad Grandad series, The Forbidden Files series, and eleven novels, including The Gods And Their Machines, Small-Minded Giants, and his steampunk trilogy, The Wildenstern Saga.

In 2014 Oisin won the European Science Fiction Society Award, given to a writer in recognition of recent works. His books have been sold in the US, Canada (in French), France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, Slovenia, Romania, Portugal, Turkey, Brazil and Japan.

Oisin will speak on:

– How his career has developed over the past 15 years

– Discuss how reading (and publishing) is changing

– Technical / Digital publishing & creativity

– Pros and Cons of trying to earn a living from illustration and writing

– The need to encourage creativity and reading in children.

What exactly is Artificial Intelligence(AI) and how can it be used in a financial services context?

The financial world stands on the edge of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way people use financial services. The explosion of data in the financial sector has made it difficult (almost impossible) to analyse, without automated support to drive better, data-driven decisions and leveraging automations to fast and convenient service.

Refresh Boyne, and the M1 Payments Corridor are delighted to welcome Ken Cregan, Head of Financial Services Consulting, IBM Ireland, to discuss AI, and how it will change the way we interact with financial services companies (and other sectors) in the future.

The new EU regulation, PSD2, allows for banks to collaborate with third-party start-ups to better use their customers’ data. This has the potential to drive a flourish of AI developments in finance. Firms will work to enable access to their systems for account aggregators and direct-credit payment initiators and improve authentication for online payments.

Financial institutions are increasingly putting faith in AI to:

– Improve consumer personalisation and automate processes in real time.

– AI helps by analyzing larger volumes of security data and is also able to scale to the size of a company as it grows. This can aid in detecting fraudulent behaviour, suspicious transactions, and potential future attacks.

– Reducing duplicate expenses and human error

– Offering Data-Analytic driven Insights; with AI, you can process a huge volume of data which can be used to create reports that not only increase productivity and revenue, but also help with complex decision-making processes.

– Utilise Chatbots in Financial Services, decreasing costs and increasing data-driven analysis

Opportunities for Fintech Startups: AI technology is becoming increasingly accessible and affordable and is being used to help smaller startups as they can access the tools to compete with larger players within their industry.

The talk will be followed by Q&A session, and networking over pizza & beverage

Ken has over 20 years experience as a transformation consultant principally within Financial Services. Specific expertise in the area customer experience transformation. He has designed and lead some of the most innovative and challenging transformation programmes within the Retail Banking sector, and is currently working with a number leading banks, and non-banks, in applying AI to achieving business objectives.

As part of Local Enterprise Week 2018, The Mill and the Local Enterprise Office Louth are delighted to invite you to the upcoming Refresh Boyne talk in The Mill Enterprise Hub.

As Managing Director of eir Television and eir Sport, Glen’s responsibilities include the strategic, operational and commercial direction of the eir Television platform, channels and apps. Prior to joining eir, Glen was Managing Director of RTE Television from 2010 -2016 where he was responsible for the commercial, editorial, operational and strategic direction of all of RTE’s Television channels. He was a member of the RTE Executive Board and was President of the EBU Television committee which represents the interests of over 70 public service television channels across Europe and North Africa.

Traditional TV has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, with increased use of the internet and social media. Increased competition may see Technology giants such as Amazon, Netflix and Facebook all weighing up the possibilities of getting involved in Premiership football. Amazon have already netted the rights to show 37 ATP tennis tournaments in the UK and Ireland, with Facebook beginning to broadcast Champions League matches thanks to an agreement with Fox Sports. Amazon Prime is now livestreaming NFL games. A recent report revealed that the average U.S. Wi-Fi–enabled household streams an average of one hour and 40 minutes of Netflix content directly to their television on a daily basis. In August 2017, the Social media giant Facebook made a move into dedicated video, pitting it against YouTube and TV networks. Facebook Watch will be personalised so that users can discover new shows, based on what their friends are watching, and viewers will also be able to see comments and connect with friends and dedicated groups for shows.

Refresh Boyne and The Mill Enterprise Hub are delighted to have Glen speak on the future of TV and how technology will affect our viewing habits, and access to sports.

Bitcoin recently surged past $7,000 to hit a new record high. Why exactly are bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies on the rise? How secure are they?

It has been a year of unprecedented growth for the largely unregulated market, with dozens of new currencies appearing every month in “Initial Coin Offerings” or ICOs. There have been at least three dozen heists of cryptocurrency exchanges since 2011. More than 980,000 bitcoins have been stolen, which today would be worth about $4bn.

Refresh Boyne and the M1 Payments Corridor are delighted to welcome Jack Nagle to discuss the growth of cryptocurrencies, explain what exactly they are, and look at some of the potential security issues.

This will be an opportunity for informed debate on the merits and risks of cryptocurrency, and some prediction on it’ future.

Jack Nagle is Head of Business Development at DCU’s Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce (IC4). A thirty year veteran of the IT Industry, with over 20 years in the area of Security and Compliance in a career that has spanned start-ups, consulting for the European Commission, implementation of major international projects, and positions with companies as varied as Baltimore Technologies, Cybertrust, McAfee and Verizon.

The Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce (IC4) is multi-institutional research centre located at Dublin City University. The vision for the Cloud Computing Technology Centre is to be an internationally recognised industry-led centre of excellence for innovation and applied research, that accelerates the development and adoption of Cloud technology and show cases Ireland’s capabilities in this field.

The latest Refresh Boyne event on June 29th saw a packed house at The Cross Pub in Drogheda listening to Brendan Kearns, an Australian Digital Product Designer, based in London, speaking on ‘Creating a Design Culture’. This continues Refresh Boyne’s strong track record of bringing leading creative and technical thinkers to the NorthEast region.

For almost a decade Brendan has worked with design studios and technology companies in Australia, Europe, and North America. Currently lead designer for InVision Enterprise, the driving force behind design and collaboration at some of the world’s most innovative companies, Brendan is working on building a more powerful design process for millions of users. InVision simplifies virtually every aspect of the product design workflow and makes collaboration a core part of the process for millions of people across design, development, project management and marketing. Organisations such as Twitter, Sony, IBM, Uber, Evernote, and Salesforce rely on InVision Enterprise to power their design process.

During his talk, Brendan mentioned the following:

  • Learnings from some of tech’s best design teams
  • InVision’s seven principles of digital product design
  • How to start becoming a user-centered company
  • How designers can own user problems inside organisations.
  • Choosing the right methods for design at scale.
  • Start to create a design culture inside organisations

According to Sean Downey of Refresh Boyne “I was aware that the Boyne region had a very strong creative tradition, but I felt that a lot of the activity was fragmented and below the radar. Refresh Boyne events offer local creative talent and startups an opportunity to hear from leading thinkers across the creative and technical sectors, which are continually criss-crossing with each other”

Breanndán Casey of The Mill commented that “prior to the establishment of the Refresh Boyne voluntary organisation, it was difficult for like-minded startups in the technical and creative sectors to meet at the same event. The caliber of speakers has been very exciting, and includes startup expert Eamon Leonard, Valista Founder Raomal Perrera, and PR Guru Paul Hayes. Past topics include Gaming, Mongo DB, Lean Startup methodology, UX, and Podcasting. Our future speakers include Declan Costello, Head of IT Infrastructure at Ryanair speaking on ‘The Digital Transformation of Ryanair’, and International Investor Bill Liao of SOS Ventures on ‘Turning Impossible into Inevitable’.

All Refresh Boyne events are free and attendees can register at www.refreshboyne.org .
