Transition year students in the nine Drogheda-based secondary schools (including Dunleer and Laytown) will have a chance to put their innovation skills to the test and win the 2018 Drogheda Young Innovator competition.

Now in it’s 4th year, the 2018 competition was launched on Thursday February 8th, in the new conference facilities at The Mill; Drogheda’s Enterprise Hub.

Organised by a voluntary group of teachers and local business people, the competition challenges Drogheda’s 2nd level students to think about an innovating career in science & technology, social enterprise, or business. The competition is supported by local innovative companies such as State Street, Coca-Cola International Services, East Coast Bakehouse and Fitz Scientific.

Applicants will attend an Innovation workshop on April 11th in The Mill Enterprise Centre, where they can get real time feedback on their projects from the judges and other students. The final will take place at Coca Cola’s Southgate office.

There are 3 main categories – Science / Technology, Enterprise / Business, and Social Enterprise. There will be cash prizes for group and individuals in each category, and one overall winner. Applications for the Young Scientist and the Student Enterprise competition will be eligible to apply.

Blathnaid from Our Lady’s College in Greenhills scooped the top award in 2017, who impressed judges with her business, “Daisy’s Pawsome Bowties”. Blathnaid, at twelve years of age, is the youngest winner of the DYI competition.

“Recognising & rewarding our young innovators is a big deal. We want to encourage and reward Drogheda’s best young innovators. We want Drogheda to be proud of its science, business and social innovators”, said Breanndan Casey of The Mill at launch. “I fully expect some of these students to be establishing businesses in The Mill in the next decade, and building on our rich heritage of innovation”

Winners will be announced in May 2018.

As Managing Director of eir Television and eir Sport, Glen’s responsibilities include the strategic, operational and commercial direction of the eir Television platform, channels and apps. Prior to joining eir, Glen was Managing Director of RTE Television from 2010 -2016 where he was responsible for the commercial, editorial, operational and strategic direction of all of RTE’s Television channels. He was a member of the RTE Executive Board and was President of the EBU Television committee which represents the interests of over 70 public service television channels across Europe and North Africa.

Traditional TV has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, with increased use of the internet and social media. Increased competition may see Technology giants such as Amazon, Netflix and Facebook all weighing up the possibilities of getting involved in Premiership football. Amazon have already netted the rights to show 37 ATP tennis tournaments in the UK and Ireland, with Facebook beginning to broadcast Champions League matches thanks to an agreement with Fox Sports. Amazon Prime is now livestreaming NFL games. A recent report revealed that the average U.S. Wi-Fi–enabled household streams an average of one hour and 40 minutes of Netflix content directly to their television on a daily basis. In August 2017, the Social media giant Facebook made a move into dedicated video, pitting it against YouTube and TV networks. Facebook Watch will be personalised so that users can discover new shows, based on what their friends are watching, and viewers will also be able to see comments and connect with friends and dedicated groups for shows.

As part of the M1 Payments Corridor initiative, The Mill and partners has been working with local teenagers on a Digital Payments Dojo for the past year. It is a fun and exciting project relating to payments and payments technology that allows the group to develop their skills in Coding, Project management, and Digital communication (graphics, video & social media).

Impacts to date include:

– Fortnightly meetings where teenagers work on projects

– Visit to MasterCard Centre of Excellence

– Presentation at Paypal on Blockchain as part of Louth LEO Enterprise week in March 2017

The next stage is to create and develop an App related to digital payments. However, we need additional support from mentors to realise this ambition. The Dojo-ers have the raw talent, but need some assistance from experienced app developers.

The second half of the session will include a facilitated workshop amongst Dojo-ers and attendees on how we want the Dojo to develop, and a look at some of the technical opportunities of developing a Payments App.

M1 Payments Corridor is a key part of the Government’s NorthEast Action Plan for Jobs which proposes the creation of a ‘digital payments hub’ along the M1 economic corridor with the potential to create hundreds of sustainable new jobs. It is an industry grouping of ePayments / Fintech companies, and allied stakeholders (IDA, EI, DCU, DKIT, Louth Economic Forum), promoted by The Mill, that serves the wider geographic M1 corridor in a Fintech vertical known as ePayments. Industry members of the M1 Steering Group include Vesta, PayPal, State Street, Aphix Software, Yapstone, and Coca-Cola International Services.

Financial forecasting

Whether you are trying to predict the short-term cashflow requirements of your business, or are about to compile a business plan or even apply for a bank loan, you are going to need to prepare some financial projections. In order to do this, you will need to understand the basics of financial forecasting. Typically businesses will prepare a set of financial projections (forecasts) for a 3 year period.

The main components of a set of financial projections are:

  • Profit and Loss Account
  • Cashflow Statement
  • Balance Sheet

This course will provide participants with an overview of the key aspects of financial forecasting for a start-up or existing small business. Participants will be taken through a case study that will show them how to build a basic financial forecasting model in Microsoft Excel that can be used for their future requirements.
