The latest Refresh Boyne event on June 29th saw a packed house at The Cross Pub in Drogheda listening to Brendan Kearns, an Australian Digital Product Designer, based in London, speaking on ‘Creating a Design Culture’. This continues Refresh Boyne’s strong track record of bringing leading creative and technical thinkers to the NorthEast region.

For almost a decade Brendan has worked with design studios and technology companies in Australia, Europe, and North America. Currently lead designer for InVision Enterprise, the driving force behind design and collaboration at some of the world’s most innovative companies, Brendan is working on building a more powerful design process for millions of users. InVision simplifies virtually every aspect of the product design workflow and makes collaboration a core part of the process for millions of people across design, development, project management and marketing. Organisations such as Twitter, Sony, IBM, Uber, Evernote, and Salesforce rely on InVision Enterprise to power their design process.

During his talk, Brendan mentioned the following:

  • Learnings from some of tech’s best design teams
  • InVision’s seven principles of digital product design
  • How to start becoming a user-centered company
  • How designers can own user problems inside organisations.
  • Choosing the right methods for design at scale.
  • Start to create a design culture inside organisations

According to Sean Downey of Refresh Boyne “I was aware that the Boyne region had a very strong creative tradition, but I felt that a lot of the activity was fragmented and below the radar. Refresh Boyne events offer local creative talent and startups an opportunity to hear from leading thinkers across the creative and technical sectors, which are continually criss-crossing with each other”

Breanndán Casey of The Mill commented that “prior to the establishment of the Refresh Boyne voluntary organisation, it was difficult for like-minded startups in the technical and creative sectors to meet at the same event. The caliber of speakers has been very exciting, and includes startup expert Eamon Leonard, Valista Founder Raomal Perrera, and PR Guru Paul Hayes. Past topics include Gaming, Mongo DB, Lean Startup methodology, UX, and Podcasting. Our future speakers include Declan Costello, Head of IT Infrastructure at Ryanair speaking on ‘The Digital Transformation of Ryanair’, and International Investor Bill Liao of SOS Ventures on ‘Turning Impossible into Inevitable’.

All Refresh Boyne events are free and attendees can register at www.refreshboyne.org .

Mobile App Development – which do you choose Native or Hybrid?Mohammed Malaka

There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to both. People are generally sitting in one camp or the other and defend their camp strongly.

This talk is about Mohammed’s Journey from Native to Hybrid App Development and is sure to be a hot topic and prompt a lot of questions at the end!

About Mohammed

Mohammed Malaka is an experienced developer and is currently a solution architect at HP. Mohammed is the organiser of the Ionic Ireland Meetup and has also spoken at the AngularJS meetup in Dublin.

He has experience in Native app development and also in developing Hybrid apps using Ionic Framework and AngularJS.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/mohammedmalaka

About Ionic Framework

Ionic Framework is a powerful HTML5 SDK that helps you build native-feeling mobile apps using web technologies like HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Ionic is focused mainly on the look and feel, and UI interaction of your app. That means it is not a replacement for PhoneGap or your favorite Javascript framework. Instead, Ionic simply fits in well with these projects in order to simplify one big part of your app: the front end. We recommend reading Where does the Ionic Framework fit in? to get a good understanding of Ionic’s goals.

Ionic currently requires AngularJS in order to work at its full potential. While you can still use the CSS portion of the framework, you’ll miss out on powerful UI interactions, gestures, animations, and other things.

Ionic 1 is the stable version at the moment but Ionic 2 which is based on Angular 2, recently released, will also be released soon. Ionic 2 has overhauled nearly every part, from the way that users navigate through your pages, how we efficiently manage UI, to how we help you wield the true powers of the underlying device.

An accomplished host of many technology events in Ireland and abroad, he has delivered innovative marketing strategies at international trade shows such as GDC and SxSW. He was also a founder of Games Ireland.

Paul is CEO and Founder of Beachhut PR, where he drives strategy for a wide variety of tech clients in multiple verticals and geographies. He is known as one of the best connectors in the Irish tech ecosystem and has mentored over 150 startups.

Originally from Thurles, Paul has lately developed a passion for cycling and does Paris-Nice to support local paralympian, Peter Ryan.

Talk outline:

Messaging for the company

What you are selling needs to speak to the needs of prospective clients or more importantly at this stage of the company, investors. How do you prick the ear of the right investor, at the right time, with the right message?

Sectoral segmentation messaging

Differentiating yourself in the sector is key, what is your niche, what can you define? Customers have specific requirements nowadays of what they expect from a platform, service, or product. You have to make the rules as to what your company expects at the very minimum from a sector and go beyond the customer’s expectations.

Story building

Behind the messaging of the the company, is the situation you found yourself in that was a pain point for many others and you strived to come up with the solution. Integrating this story with the aims and goals of the company and the overall messaging of the company personifies the brand and entices the sufferers of similar ailments to call on you.

Branding and language

Does your name make sense? What is your tagline? Who are your audience? What resonates with them in a world of casual instant communication, if you audience is corporate, your audience is not going to relate to gifs and twitter, they want to hear about how you can make their lives easier and the innovations you are bring to the sector.

Event marketing

What we find is the best platform for gathering like minded investors and clients are events. What can you showcase while showcasing yourself and becoming the spokesperson for your sector?

International PR

Taking your brand international involves research into the journalistic landscape of your target audience abroad.

refresh boyneFor years every business has known they needed to invest in a web presence and social media, but many of them do so without a defined strategy? SMEs have concentrated on the figures (how many likes etc), when the most important things to focus on are: am I reaching my audience / Is my audience doing what I want them to do when I do reach them?

The talk will briefly focus on a number of issues (outlined below) and will provide an opportunity for group debate and input from other attendees.

  • Traditional Media on Life Support?

“The ways businesses and Governments have reached their audience for more than 100 years has changed, completely and forever, in less than a decade…”

  • What Platform are your customers using? Finding out where your customer is and focusing your energy there

“Orwell’s 1984 is a reality – Facebook/Google are the Big Brothers. And we can hone our messages to zone in on specifics, for example, the twenty-something male in Louth who’s interested in learning guitar.”

  • How to reach your customer at the right time – Social media, Search, Email.

“We can find people who have a problem that our business can fix. In real time.”

  • Digital Journey: Making the experience as smooth as possible for your customer.

Think of your website as a ski slope. When your potential customer that you’ve worked so hard to attract there lands anywhere on that slope, you want them to find their way easily to the bottom. On many websites, in contrast, the destination you want your user to reach is often at the top of the next mountain!

  • Relationships – Translating one-time customers into repeat business.

“Three old maxims are true: 1. Word of mouth is powerful. 2. People buy from people. 3. It’s much easier to get another sale from an existing customer than it is to find a new one. And when it comes to online, all of these are possibly even more relevant than ever before.”
